Liz’s story

Busy Lizzie’s

Hi, I’m Liz. I bake cakes and bakes for every occasion from my kitchen in Alvaston, Derby. This is how Busy Lizzie’s came to be. (Draft written from Liz’s own posts. Liz, please edit freely!)

  1. Liz smoothing buttercream on a cake on the turntable

Baking for a long, long time

I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember. What started as birthday cakes for family and friends slowly turned into orders from friends of friends, and then from people I’d never met. That’s when Busy Lizzie’s was born.

  2. A karate gi birthday cake

The family kitchen, and some very random requests

My boys keep me on my toes. When I ask what cake they’d like, I never know what’s coming: one year it was a pork pie, this year a karate cake. Those requests taught me that there’s no such thing as a silly idea, just a fun challenge.

  3. A wedding cake with fondant ruffles

    Weddings, and a few firsts

My first fondant ruffles were on Michelle and Adie’s wedding cake, and I learned so much making it. A year later I made their anniversary cake too. Since then I’ve set up cake and bakes tables at Makeney Hall and Royle Forest, including my very first stacked cookie pie ‘cake’.

  4. A bowl of homemade lemon curd

    Homemade everything

Lemon curd, salted caramel, jams: if I can make it myself, I do. It takes longer, especially in a heatwave (late nights and early mornings!), but you can taste the difference.

  5. Boxes of traybakes for a corporate order

Bakes for the farm shop, the office and the school fair

Every week my blondies and brownies head to The Farm Shop Hulland. I’ve baked branded cupcakes for Derby businesses, my biggest order so far was 50 traybakes in one go, and you’ll find me with a table of bakes at school summer fairs and coffee mornings.

  6. A lemon cake topped with dried lemon slices

    A big shift

In summer 2026 I decided to take Busy Lizzie’s more seriously: more posts, proper terms, and now this website, so you can see what I make and order in a few clicks. It’s scary and exciting in equal measure. Thank you for being part of it.

What matters

Baked the proper way

  • Homemade fillings

Lemon curd, salted caramel and jams made in Liz’s kitchen, not squeezed from a tub.

  • Every cake bespoke

No two orders are the same. Your cake is planned, baked and decorated just for you.

  • Local friends

Toppers by Maggie Anna Cakes & Treats, flowers by Mrs Bouquets, and bakes at The Farm Shop Hulland.

  • Part of the community

School summer fairs, Macmillan coffee mornings and plenty of Derby birthdays.
